Brightworkroom (est. 2008) is an artists’ group based in Seoul and founded by novelist Kim Hyona and visual artist Kim Inkyung. The group engages and works with neurodivergent artists and experiments with creative and communicative methods through diverse art forms. With the aim of fostering intuitive artistic expression and championing artists who would otherwise not be part of the “institution of art,” the group organises exhibitions and workshops, and produces publications in collaboration with the artists and creators they work with. For the Biennale, they present the works of three women artists, namely Kym Jin Hong, Na Jeong Suk and Yoon Mi Ae.

BIO
Na Jeong Suk (b. 1964) sets the landscape of her imagination on paper, creating patterns consisting of star-shaped units that are densely woven together. In her drawings, the variations in the units’ size create an observable rhythmic flow. By putting dots at a regular intervals amid the pattern, Na produces an illusion of hundreds of swarming fish.

Yoon Mi Ae (b. 1955) presents a series of 140 collages. Entitled Communion Wafers, the series is made with cutouts of everyday found materials such as newspaper, milk cartons and plastic snack wrappers. Yoon explores and engages with the different textures and colours using a diverse range of found materials.

Kym Jin Hong (b. 1991) presents 15 drawings made from various materials including marker pen, colour pencil and watercolour on paper. Kym often illustrates a set of figures within a single frame. Each set typically comprises the representation of a person along with their shadow. To Kym, the shadow represents a person’s feeling of uneasiness and emotional distress.
