    How does your garden grow?
    10 May 2011
Greeting visitors when they step into Old Kallang Airport is a community garden, complete with bird cages, sheltered benches and plants growing out of suitcases. The garden is an artwork entitled Proposed Helsinki Garden at the Singapore Biennale created during the Vernissage weekend by New York-born artist Martha Rosler in collaboration with local artists, academics, students, migrant workers,

Some of the contributions to Martha Rosler's Proposed Helsinki Garden (2011) at the Old Kallang Airport.
and community groups and advocacy groups. It was part of a commissioned project that was never realised when she was in Helsinki, Finland, in 2004. Rosler's collaborators have been tending this garden throughout the Biennale, which complements the idea of biennales as a focal point for the works of artists from all over the world, and reflects Singapore as a nation of migrants and a 'garden city'.

Come see how this special community garden has 'bloomed'.

Landscape and project assistance: Prince's Landscape and Construction Pte Ltd.

With the support of the National Parks Board, Singapore.

Pioneer Landscape Development Project (top left) and The Tree Map of Singapore (top right) are projects by Lucy Davis and Shawn Lum. These two projects explore the kinds of everyday “landscaping and development” processes that occur due to the actions of human communities and other living creatures such as birds, insects and animals, to our natural environment in urban Singapore.  The Tree Map of Singapore includes contributions by students at Nanyang Technological University and features an outline of Singapore before land reclamation was carried out.
Capability3(left) was developed by National Institute of Education (NIE) students Sim Jia Yan and Siti Sarah Binte Mamat, tackling the issue of Singaporean’s overemphasis on knowledge from books and neglecting the environment as our teacher. Capability is often measured by the knowledge we have and this work reflects the condensed and concentrated package of knowledge made for children to take up.
Purple Medicinal Garden (background) is the result of collaboration with Shirley Soh and Brendan Goh on collecting and presenting a variety of purple-coloured herbs such as Tradescantia Spathacea 'Compacta' (oyster plant) and Alternanthera Brasiliana (Brazilian Joyweed) commonly found in Singapore.
Many Heads Put Together, initiated by the Indonesian Family Network and Filipino Family Network, mimics a waterfall depicting a migrant’s life as flowing and moving with the current.
Bird Cage is an artwork contributed by NIE students Rachel Subramaniam and Tay Shu Hei. It recalls Singaporean cultures and traditions that pass with time such as bird keeping, a once-popular hobby among Singaporeans. The empty cages depict a sense of loss, and at the same time, freedom.
Migrant Plants, conceptualised by NIE students Lim Hui Chi and Yashini d/o Renganathan, depicts the cosmopolitan society of Singapore, where people from all over the world gather for the purposes of knowledge, social, and national exchange, and reflects the dispersal and diversity of plants and animals in the natural world.
