Self-Portrait,
Our Landscape (SPOL) |
 |
| Self-Portrait, Our Landscape (SPOL) was developed by Artistic Director Matthew Ngui with the Biennale Outreach team. 3,200 school students from 47 primary and secondary school across Singapore have participated, with each student encouraged to draw their self-portrait – without depicting what they look like. |
 |

Tan Hui Shan (Unity Secondary School) |
By doing so, the children had to shift their perspective and consider their environment and the ways that it has shaped them. After completing a sequence of drawings, each student then used basic animation techniques and sound to gradually morph their self-portrait into the next student's, creating a landscape of collective identities. SB2011 will present the completed animation (which runs for almost 24 hours), as well as the first drawing by each participant at the Old Kallang Airport.
Self portraits of the project participants can be found here. New images are uploaded every week; do visit the link often to view more students self portraits!
SPOL Process
The first phase of SPOL of the students' self-portraits was completed In June 2010. Over 2,700 artworks from 43 schools were rendered into an installation and presented at the annual Istana Art Event on 8 August 2010. First-year students from the NUS School of Design and Environment (Architecture) worked with Matthew Ngui to design the installation to showcase the self-portraits.
From July to September 2010, the students explored transitional drawings that 'move' from their self-portrait to a classmate's self-portrait. These transitional drawings form the basis of the animation, and students will learn how to animate these drawings in their final term of school. Students will also discuss and record an accompanying soundtrack for the animation.

| Internship Opportunities at the Singapore Biennale 2011 |
 |
Singapore Biennale 2011 would like to invite students who are taking formal internships and industry placements as part of their studies to join the team. Professional learning, exposure to the arts industry and exciting opportunities are key benefits to a Singapore Biennale internship.
The Singapore Biennale Interns will be involved in working on specific projects that may include in-depth research or writing. Being central to the behind-the-scenes work, they will gain a clearer understanding of the day-to-day operations of running a biennale. The Interns may also be required to assist across several areas including administration, exhibitions, marketing and development.
Guidelines for Internship
Eligibility
- Applicants are open to students who have a strong interest in the arts and are currently undergoing tertiary level education in Singapore, preferably in the area of arts and arts management.
- Minimum internship period is about 3 months.
Selection
Applications will be evaluated by the Singapore Biennale Secretariat. As placements for internship are limited, only shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview
Internship Roles:
To apply, please email internship@singaporebiennale.org
