12 March - 26 June 2011
Negotiating Home, History and Nation presents the work created over the last two decades, by fifty-four seminal practitioners in contemporary art from six Southeast Asian countries. Amongst the artists featured are Agus Suwage (Indonesia), Vasan Sitthiket (Thailand), Suzann Victor (Singapore), Wong Hoy Cheong (Malaysia) and Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan (The Philippines). Through a broad range of media including photography, video, painting, performance and installation art, the exhibition provides an entry to the specific characteristics of Southeast Asia’s aesthetic language and offers a key to understanding some of the region’s more recent political and social developments.

4 March - 20 March 2011| Monday – Sunday, 12pm - 9pm|The Substation Gallery.

Big Bio brings to mind a modern day Frankenstein, Mary Shelly’s 19th century novel. This science fiction exhibition consists of digital prints, a short film, and puppets. Supported by the Embassy of the United States of America, Singapore.

NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE (NUS) MUSEUM
Cigondewah: an Art Project By Tisna Sanjaya

Urban growth, industrial expansion, and their impact on the environment is a common experience often faced by smaller village communities occupying city peripheries, including Cigondewah, a village south of Bandung, Indonesia. Cigondewah: An Art Project by Tisna Sanjaya centres on the complex relationships between artist, his environment and his public. Underlying this complexity is the role of artist in sustaining a practice that is immersed into the potentials and predicaments of place and community; economic and political ecology that constrains, mediates or enables actions; the question of communal agency and artistic goals; and the place of the art market within a pragmatic social cause. Under these conditions, how is art practice reconstituted? For whom? To what productive outcomes and what limits?

26 February - 26 March 2011
New works by Indonesian artists Jumaldi Alfi, made at STPI, continue his humanistic quest by exploring mortality and memories. Inspired by the Greek myth of Sisyphus, whose story tells of man's futile attempt to attain meaning, the artist merges text with his characteristic motifs of rocks, skulls and cactus to contemplate death and one's purpose in life.
