Singapore Management University (SMU)
81 Victoria Street, Singapore 188065
Incorporated on 12 January 2000, SMU was established as the first publicly-funded private university with a focus on business and management programmes. SMU's aim is to groom outstanding business leaders and creative entrepreneurs capable of excelling in a rapidly changing and dynamic world. The first in Singapore to be set up offering an American-style education modelled after Wharton School, SMU occupies a newly completed purpose-built and state-of-the-art city campus located right in the heart of Singapore's civic and business district. The only university campus set in the city, is part of an ambitious city planning exercise now underway to revitalise community life in the heart of the city.
Today, SMU is home to over 4,000 students and comprises four schools: Lee Kong Chian School of Business, School of Accountancy, School of Economics & Social Sciences and School of Information Systems. SMU offers five bachelor's degree programmes in Business Management, Accountancy, Economics, Information Systems Management and Social Science and six master's degree programmes in Wealth Management, Applied Finance, Professional Accounting, Applied Economics and in Economics and Finance (by research). It also has a dedicated Office of Research and provides customised executive programmes for working professionals through its Office of Executive Education.
SMU has also launched the Visual Art Initiative on 12 January 2006, with the aim to fill every corner of the new campus with art and artistic activities such that its students and the public will be enriched and enlivened by artistic aesthetics and creativity. Through this initiative, SMU will develop and host exhibitions and enrichment programmes and will develop an institutional collection of contemporary art, with Southeast Asian art as the principal focus.
Campus green in SMU will be used as the Nerve Centre of the Singapore Biennale where the Information Centre, Media Centre & Gift Shop can be found. Visitors can expect to see a stunning piece of architecture designed by award winning Japanese architect, Shigeru Ban.
