POWER STATION: Public Art Project by Stefano Cagol

This public intervention in various venues around Singapore by Italian artist Stefano Cagol highlights issues relating to contemporary influences, beliefs, pre(mis)conceptions and belonging. The project challenges conceptions of identity in relation to authority, nationhood and globalisation.

An exhibition organised by the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore examining the contingencies of knowledge, appropriation, autobiography, narrative, and the production and presence of the artist within the exhibition-set. It will feature new works by Singaporebased artists Ahmad Abu Bakar, Chang Jinchao, Chen Yi-Cheng, Chong Li-Chuan, Khairuddin Hori, Ana Prvacki, Shubigi Rao, Frederic Sarkozy and Andre Tan.

This exhibition presents a new series of works on paper by Chun Kwang Young produced as part of a residency at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute in July 2006. Born in Korea in 1944, and educated in Korea and America, Chun is known for his large wall reliefs and sculptures made up of, sometimes as many as seven thousand tiny mulberry-paper-wrapped packages. This exhibition will also include new works by Chun using cast paper, as well as a series of etchings.

An exhibition by Chinese artist Shen Xiaotong, based on a journal he kept until his graduation from the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in Chengdu in 1989. The pictorial journal recorded his reflections on life and society in China during the 1980s. Diaries My Landscapes was first exhibited in Beijing in 1994, and this exhibition in Singapore is the first time these works have been exhibited outside China. In conjunction, a forum on art and politics will be held at the Singapore Art Museum at 2pm on 16 September 2006.

Based on the disarmingly simple theme of Kindness, this exhibition brings together 220 children's paintings. The pick of competitions held in 10 ASEAN countries and Japan, these paintings showcase the children's perspectives of kindness - helping the elderly, protecting the weak, ministering animals. Aged 6 to 12, these artists also wrote simple, heartfelt messages to express their hopes for a better world. The exhibition is curated by Ken Cheong.

Known as a reclusive artist, Thai painter Chatchai Puipia's "The Heart is A Lonely Painter" is currently on display at Singapore Biennale 2006. Viewers now get a chance to see more of his works, namely "8 Days a Week", a series of 8 paintings with different facial expressions of Puipia. This exhibition presents a rare opportunity for seeing Puipia's work, which was last made available for viewing several years ago.
Yayoi Kusama, a Japanese artist who at the age of 77 is the oldest artist at the Singapore Biennale, is one of the most influential living female contemporary artists. For the Biennale, she has decorated trees along Orchard Road in red and white with her signature polkadots. For the 100 Tonson Exhibition, Kusama is exhibiting her original paintings, sculpture, and over 40 prints.
