VivoCity, Singapore's largest and most iconic retail and lifestyle destination, has specially commissioned an international art collection as part of the Singapore Biennale 2006. The collection comprises seven outdoor art and street furniture designs by six world-renowned artists. Hailing from various cities in Europe and Asia, these artists have had their works exhibited all over the world and made their mark globally as leading artists.
Curated by Fumio Nanjo, Artistic Director of Singapore Biennale 2006, these fun and engaging pieces will complement the multi-dimensional experiences that will constantly surprise and stimulate visitors to VivoCity. Drawing in artists from around the globe, VivoCity's line-up includes Inges Idee, a group of four individually successful artists responsible for both the "Snowman" and "Snowflakes" pieces. The group, made up of Hans Hemmert, Axel Lieber, Thomas A. Schmidt and Georg Zey, focuses on site specific art, without committing themselves to any certain style.
While "GoGo", a piece by The Netherlands' Marc Ruygrok, is reminiscent of a 1960's designed rocket. His fellow countryman, Henk Visch's contribution, "There", is a return to basic design, with a literal man. Asia is also well represented, with Korean artist, Choi Jeong-hwa's six-metre tall "Flower Tree", Tokyo-born Hiroshi Yoshimizu's "Aphrodite's Roses", and a contribution by Hong Kong's Michael Punchman, entitled "Vivo Punch".
The only art pieces of the Singapore Biennale that will be displayed permanently, they will adorn various outdoor spaces at VivoCity, such as the courtyard, the roof-top plaza, and the 300-metre boardwalk. Comprising of different shapes, sizes, colours and materials, they will surprise, excite and delight visitors, stimulate thought and conversation, and, in some cases, even offer a seat. Offering a different perspective on artworks sited within the public sphere, the collection will be unveiled on 19 October 2006.
